Ontario-Approved Private Adoption Practitioner
Theresa Mills has a Bachelor of Social Work from Ryerson University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto. Theresa is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Theresa is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers and is a Private Adoption Practitioner, approved by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
Theresa has worked in foster care and adoption services for children’s aid societies and in children’s mental health as a family therapist. Theresa has taught the Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education (PRIDE) training program for prospective adoptive parents.
Theresa has public and private leadership experience which includes working for the Ontario government in the Child Welfare Review Unit and the Private and International Adoption Unit.
Theresa is a former Coordinator of the Private and International Adoption Unit (PIAU) responsible for private and intercountry adoptions by the residents of Ontario. As Coordinator, Theresa was appointed as a “Director” under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and the Intercountry Adoption Act. PIAU is also the designated Central Authority for the province of Ontario under the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (the “Hague Convention).
As an Ontario approved Adoption Practitioner, Theresa specializes in adoption services that include, consultation, homestudy assessments, services to biological parents and post-placement services and support.
Theresa, in her social work adoption practice, brings extensive experience in working with individuals, couples and families. Theresa has expert knowledge and experience in private domestic adoption, intercountry adoption and child welfare adoption.
